Timphu Festival

Thimpu Tshechu is a public holiday in Thimpu, Bhutan on the 10th day of the 8th month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar. Tshechu are annual religious Bhutanese festivals held in each district of Bhutan on the 10th day of a lunar month. The tshechu for Bhutan’s capital, Thimpu is an important three-day festival.

So far the official version from the internet. I was lucky to be there far back in 2005. It is an awfully fascinating event. Held under a glaring Himalayan sun and thousands of people milling around, trying to get the best vantage point.

Not only are the dances and performances of great interest, but so is the watching of the spectators. Everything is bathed in colour. Even before reaching the site within the palace area, long cues of people forming to get to the site. Of the three days, we were there at the day prior to the official opening and during the fist official day. More about it in my travel story about Bhutan, soon to be told here.
